Artistic Philosophy
I am a creative photographer. My main inspiration is the natural world and the experiences I have while I'm exploring it. My goal is to transfer a sense of mood and emotion, impression and imagination.
My type of photography is art, not journalism. This means I'm more interested in giving a view inside my mind than I am at objectively recording or documenting a place and time. I'm more concerned that the colors in an image work, than that they are correct. I'm more concerned with how light is balanced, than how the camera actually recorded it. I'd rather create an image that is uncluttered and has an interesting perspective, than live with distracting elements and distortions in order to stay true to what the camera saw.
That said, in my work there's no substitute for being a skilled photographer. My photographs represent actual experiences that I've had. All my photographs are of real places in actual light and weather events.
For the type of work I aim to produce, it is paramount to start with raw photos that are sharp, well exposed and low noise. Original light is important, and the composition in my camera is important. Also, how my images look big and in close up is very important. There's a big difference between what shows up on the internet and social media, and what shows up in a large format print. Noise, sharpness, chromatic aberration, adjustment edges, halos, clipped highlights, and overstretched pixels all show up in print when the process of image creation is not perfect.
